Ofu and Tau transportation, hiking

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / American Samoa

Hey guys,
I am new to the board and looking for some help.

Ofu and Tau islands are fairly close together. Does anyone know if local fisherman would provide a ferry from Ofu to Tau for a reasonable fee? Water too rough? Probably a pipe dream, but it would save some money on airfare.

Cant seem to find much hiking information related to Ofu and Tau, The NPS info is very basic. Anyone have any personal experiences they are willing to share?

Thanks for taking time to read my post, take care, safe travels,

Matt

Hey Matt,

I run the website for Vaoto Lodge on Ofu Island and have visited the islands 15 times over the last 10 years.

I've paid villagers to ferry me to and from Ta'u, so, yes you should be able to do this too. The fee will be something you negotiate with the boat owner. Don't be surprised if you are asked to pay $100 or so . . .

I've not hiked Ta'u, but have hiked all over Ofu and Olosega. About the only places I've not been is to the top of Olosega's mount Piumafua and the backside of Olosega.

Matt,

I flew from Pago to Tau and spent a day there then paid a couple fishermen to jump on their boat across to Ofu village. We paid $100 for the two of us and they gave us each a beer for the ride. Eli was the name of the captain and lives in Ofu. We hiked around the island for a week, then flew from Ofu back to Pago. It was an awesome experience. Ofu is one of my favorite places in the world.
