time difference and flights between the two Samoas

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / American Samoa

Hi travellers
Could someone help me out please? To get the flight from Pago to Ofu on a Thursday, will I have to leave on Friday from Apia? Also, do you know what time the flight usually leaves? If it's morning, early or late afternoon for instance as the airline is not replying to my questions! :(

Another option is to take the ferry... The schedule says it leaves Apia at 12am (that seems to be midnight although I ve read that it leaves at 11pm somewhere else!) and then arrives at 8am and is a 7 hour journey. So assuming it leaves on a Thursday going to Friday from Apia, it will still be Thursday morning in Pago when it arrives, right? This is way too confusing for my small mind ;).

Would really appreciate your advice as I see this forum is not so active!

Thanks!

AS is 24 hours behind Samoa. Friday becomes thursday in the short flight to Pago Pago.
Talofa Airlines or Samoa Airways have multiple Samoa to AS flights per day. Look at the one which suits you best

As said above, Samoa is a day ahead of American Samoa, actually 25 hours to be specific. Talofa doesn't fly out to Ofu at this point, just Samoa Air. There is Manu'a Airlines that is supposed to be coming on board, but no flights yet.

Don't do the ferry if your travel plans depend on it. When the ferry breaks down it can be out of commission for weeks while they wait on parts. Recently it was out for a month. Also, schedule yourself buffer time when you're traveling between the two Samoas if you have a connection. Flights get delayed, and it can mess with the schedule, more-so with these smaller airlines. Also, tell Samoa Airlines that you have connected flight so your baggage is tagged priority otherwise there is a huge chance it will not make it on your flight. All luggage is checked except for backpacks etc. since they are on small planes.

Have they gotten back with you on the time? We moved to Am Samoa this fall, but haven't taken the trip out to Ofu yet. Pretty sure it's a morning flight as of Nov/Dec, but things do change. If you haven't heard back, I can give them a call. Also, be careful about the timeline after Ofu. Sometimes the tourists get bumped from the weekly flight back to Pago if someone from the Manua Islands needs to see doctor, etc. It happens somewhat frequently!

Ask any questions you need from someone living here :) Meredith

Only Samoa Airways flies to Ofu. They just added a second weekly flight, so I believe the current schedule is Tues/Thurs flights.
