Visiting the tuna canneries in Pago Pago?

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / American Samoa

According to Loney Planet, the two tuna canneries in Pago Pago offer public tours, but they must be booked in advance. I was hoping to do so via the Internet, avoiding a very expensive international phone call. Has anyone joined either of the two tours, and do you have contact details or other information?

Thanks, Michael

Haven't been but I did a quick google. Apparently Starkist, home of Charlie the Tuna does not give tours but this article in the Honolulu Starbulletin describes a trip to to the Samoan Packing Co., home of Chicken of the Sea. I'd email them.

Thanks, I sent an email to Chicken of the Sea.

I heard back, and they are closed over Christmas, when I will be in American Samoa.

Thanks for posting an update.

Well, just to close the loop. I did visit Pago Pago over Christmas, and was only able to photograph the canneries from outside, but I did get a nice photo of the enormous Charlie the Tuna statue. He looks remarkably happy for a tuna that's going to be gutted and canned.
