A Question for Raro

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Cook Islands

Hi Raro,

Just a quick question regarding your old place, now Muri Beach Resort. Looking at booking in next year as all reports are very good. However my wife and I are not really into swimming pools. What is the water like in the lagoon for swimming (not snorkeling)? I realise it would be greatly affected by the tide but at say half to high can you get a decent swim? Many thanks John.

No problem John. At high tide it's a meter deep maybe 20m out from the beach. At low tide it's a mtr deep about 40m out from the bech. Just head directly out towards the barrier reef (about 100-120m?), about halfway or so to there it is always deep enough to swim. Then if you want to go for a long swim, head to your right, around the back of Ta'akoka islet. You can swim another mile or two south and then west towards Titikaveka village, it will always be over a meter deep, often 2m or 3m or so. That corner of the lagoon is the deepest on Rarotonga, that mile or two south of Ta'akoka islet.

Always wear reef shoes when in the lagoon, we used to supply them for free, I assume the new owners do also, but you can check on that.
