Arcadia Cottage

Hi All (Raro in particular), can you give us any feedback on Arcadia Cottage at Muri Beach? It looks like a good spot. There's only two of us and we thought it might be more peaceful (and cheaper!) than a resort. Thanks.

Hi---
Sorry, I'm not familiar with it. There are a lot of houses that have been converted to rentals, then given names.

But Muri Beach is a great place to rent a place.

I'd look for the following in a rental house:

Screens on all or most windows.
Ceiling fan, or at least a couple of pedestal fans.

---If it's on the beach it will be more expensive.
---Next level is on the beach side of the main ride.
---Next level is across the main road. for these you may get more mosquitos, if there is a taro patch near you, which is the case with many rental houses across the road.
---On a side road heading inland. Could be a lot more mozzies.

In general you will save money on a rental house, as compared to a resort, etc.

I would not rent one on the west side (Arotangi), too many break-ins.

Always lock your door, and lock your windows also, when you go out. Local teenagers etc that are inclined to petty theft know all the rental houses. But in general, Muri is a bit safer than the west side.

Have fun!!

Oops, it should have read "Arorangi" for the west side's main village.

I am also not familiar with Arcadia Cottage. I spent six weeks on Muri Beach between Lambert's Lodging, three bedrooms in a beachfront private home for NZ$35.00 per person per night with meals available. I paid NZ$15.00 for a full breakfast and dinner. A great island couple, Pu and Terry are hosts. Terry operates the nearby shell shop on the main road, great hosts and a great location.

On the same parcel is [http://www.shellbungalows.co.ck/] two self-contained screened cottages with a studio for NZ$110.00 and one bedroom for NZ$130.00. Discounts for extended stays.

The best part of the two spots is the picnic table they share in the shade of the ironwood tree right on the lagoon between Pacific Resort and Muri Beach Club Resort. Finest spot on the island and my official "office" where I wrote the upcoming 2nd Edition of Papa Mike's Cook Islands Handbook, tell them Papa Mike sent you and tell Pu I miss my morning Paw-Paw (Papaya) here on the mainland.

I agree with Mike, Terry is a great guy, try to stay at one of his places if you can.
