best cheapish place to stay with young kids

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Cook Islands

Hi,
im researching a holiday for 2 weeks in Fen 2013 for 2 adults and twins girls will have just turned 5

would love to spend a week in Aitutaki but seems pretty expensive, we are hoping to pay about $125 a night for all of us in decent accomodation, well as long as the bugs/mosssies cant get in and its clean and has a fan (prefer a/c)

I thinking cant get that on Aitutaki for that price, can someone tell me im wrong PLEASE! :)
if not can people suggest other cook island places in the price/quality range that have a clear blue shallow lagoon, beaches that our girls can hand feed fish, thats not touristy like Thailand, and wont cost us our house to eat and or advise on amusing my family for 2 weeks cheaply in that area, got a headache from reseaching the islands in the pacific, thaland, so many places arrggg!

was looking at the Yasawa islands fiji, but seems expensive to stay there and the rest of Fiji is probably touristy t=like thailand i think from what ive read, help :)

$5100 NZD sounds low for four people air and hotel for two weeks.

Where are flying from?

If you do decide upon the Rarotongan Resort because it offers the best all-round value with direct flights, accommodation and airport transfers I recommend that you seek out places to dine away fromt the resort. Not only due to the cost, but mainly because there are too many nice spots to dine away from this resort.

Nearby dining (to the Rarotongan) includes Kaena Takeaways and at night their bistro about 100 metres away. Cocoputt course and cafe approx 500 metres further away from Kaena. And Sunhaven teahouse about 1km from the resort. There are lots of choices, including family dining around Raro. Either hire a car or catch the bus.

Incidentally, have a look at package deals for the Edgewater Resort. Its a spawling property, set on a marine reserve, with a kids club, pool and onsite activities. There are more places to dine within this locality (western side). Besides the Edgewater has more s/c accommodation including apartments and villas for you to prepare sandwiches and snacks. The Edgewater's Spagetti House restaurant is aimed at families with pizzas, pastas, steak, chicken meals, burgers plus wines and beers. They also have island nights, same as the Rarotongan does. Closer to town by bus by 7 - 10 minutes driving/bus.

We looked for weeks and finally decided on Amuri Guesthouse. I know it's just a guesthouse but Maraiti is a great host with loads of stories about the island. We paid $50 a night but the room had a double and a single bed so three could stay there easy. The plus is that you have access to the kitchen so you can cook your own meals and it's located next to the supermarket/internet. There is no beach access but we actually enjoyed the walk each day.
