Cook Islands / Tahiti / Fiji - December

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Cook Islands

Hi, as part of a round the world trip I will hopefully be heading to the above around december time. How bad is the wet season, ie will it spoil the experience ? or are the bursts short or at night time ? Basically should I be looking at a different time of year ?I appreciate your advice !

Thanks Rich

we were in Moorea last Dec. for a month and had lovely weather nearly all of the time ,The rain came and went quickly .One week out of the 4 was more over cast and Cooks bay and Opunohu bay seemed to attract the clouds and rain... The sun would be shining on us and just around the corner it was raining. It didn't ruin our stay it was fun to see the storms arriving and blow over us and then the sun came out. I think the flatter the island the less rain ... the tall mountains hold the clouds and are misty and damp...but I am not a weather woman!!!!!

It will be a little hotter and more humid in Dec. than, say, May to Nov. But the rain is usually for maybe an hour or so, then passes over quickly, as Rarotonga does not have high mountains. Occasionally we will get a few days of rain in a row, but it's not often. The main thing tourists feel is the increased humidity, so if humidity is a problem to you, consider a place with air-con. But most places have ceiling fans if they don't have AC, so that may be sufficient.

I see you want to include the Cooks, Tahiti and Fiji. You should realize that after the end of this month there won't be any flights between the Cooks and Fiji, and from Tahiti to Cooks is now on Air Tahiti (not Air New Zealand, as from 1977 to early this year), which is an extra fare over and above your RTW ticket.
