daily costs

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Cook Islands

hello,
can anyone suggest a total rough daily cost for traveling in the Cooks at the budget end of the scale? Is it cheaper/more expensive than Samoa or Tonga?
thanks!

Without knowing where you intend to stay on Raro (accom property), and preferences for daily food intake, I can answer your query by saying that the benefits of staying on Rarotonga relate to the close proximity to everything on this capital island. Rarotonga has a very good public bus service. A $4.00NZ journey will take you right around the island - all 32kms of it if you start a bus tour from Avarua, the principal township. $7.00 buys a return ticket on the bus. Beaches are FREE to access, and its relatively easy to access a beautiful beach from anywhere around the island. No need to go miles out of your way simply to enjoy R&R on Rarotonga's stunning beaches. Scooter hire is cheap at $20.00NZ per day, with 7 day deals etc on offer. Cook Islands driver's licences cost $20.00NZ and are compulsory for every driver using Cook Islands roads. Plenty of shops selling local produce and wide range of imported foods. The Kiwi dollar is currently trading around $0.70US. Lots of dining options, from hamburgers to fine dining. Island nights are as popular as ever. $30.00NZ for dinner and spectacular floorshow at Staircase Restaurant in Avarua. Accomm at backpackers/ budget rental homes start around $30.00/$50.00 per single, full cooking facilities, solar hot water for showers etc. The Cook Islands is renowned for its friendly laidback culture, excellent entertainers and showmanship in dance and song, very relaxed lifestyle, high natural beauty of the surrounding scenery, good amenity values, and lots of great accommodation choice and visitor satisfaction. The Cook Islands is currently the No 1. spot in the South Pacific to visit!
