mobile telephones in CooksCountry forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Cook Islands
Hello. I'm looking for advice on mobile phones in Raro and Aitu. How hard is it to get a prepaid SIM card in Raro for my mobile? How's the coverage in Aitu? Thanks.
Hello, I recently visited both of those islands. On Raro, you have to go to the Cook Islands Telecom Office and pay NZ $25 for a SIM card (note: they are closed on Sunday). You can then buy credit at most of the small grocery stores. Note that for data, it is cheaper to buy hotspot data (where you are on wifi) then cellular data. Expect slow download speeds. On Atiu, they only have a tower covering part of the island. We stayed at Marshal Humphreys' B&B, and were able to get cellular coverage in certain parts of the house (best reception was on the porch). I do not know what the coverage is like at the other accomodation. | 1
Thank you for the advice! | 2
No problem! I'm not sure where the Cook Island regulars are, but feel free to post again if you have any more questions about your trip. We really enjoyed our visit to Raro, Aitutaki, and Atiu in May/June. | 3
