moving to the Cook Islands

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Cook Islands

Hey all, so I know people love the Cook Islands. But could you live there for 8 months? I might have an 8 month job opportunity there and thought it would be lovely, but reconsidered after thinking about the isolation factor. So what do you think?

Huh??? Unless you choose to seclude yourself to an atoll in the "Northern" group of islands, what kind of isolation are you talking about? If you've foregone a wonderful chance to stay on Rarotonga or Aitutaki under the mistaken belief that you'd be all by yourself - other than by choice - this is where you should be giving yourself a bit of a kick!

Warm regards,
Mark

Thanks Mark! When I say I've 'reconsidered' I just mean that I'm thinking about the Cook Islands as a potential home rather than a vacation spot. I think it will be wonderful if it all works out. Thanks for your advice! -Kari-

Here is a blog of a couple who decided to move to Rarotonga for a year. There are several posters on this branch who live there.

how often do you get the chance to live on a beautiful, warm, (usually) sunny, turquoise and lush green island . I look out through the palm fronds at the surf breaking over the reef every morning so happy that i took a job here! 8 months is no time at all. it is quiet compared to a big city, but after a month you just relax into the pace of life. you can get pretty much everything you crave shopping wise - if you're prepared to pay. go for it.

Are you packed yet?
Yes, a lovely place to live for a few months.....no worries there are plenty of people there and it's not THAT isolated!

We've been living on Rarotonga for the last 15 months and there is not a day where I don't count my many, many blessings in being able to live here...

I lived in the Cook Islands for two and a half years (2004-2006) and would go back in a second. You won't regret going...it is just a matter of whether you will be able to leave at the end of your eight months!

If you don't want the job, tell them I'll do it!!!!!!!!!!!!
