Hi,

we are in NZ at the mo at the amount of people that seemed to have any idea about the cook island is minimal. we arrive in a few weeks and are staying for 8 days. we are looking to simply chill by the beach. As we've been backpacking for 5 months ideally we want a comfy double but not one that will break the bank! Ideally on the beach, i know i ask to much.

we have heard of Raratonga Backpacker and Vara's anyone stayed there or can offer advice it would be much appreciated coz at this rate im sleeping in a hammock!!

Thanks in advance x

Vara's is in Muri Beach and is a popular spot with backpackers, it is on the best swimming beach and is close to shops, restaurants, and the local bus.

sunny regards,

Have just returned from 9 days at the Rarotonga backpackers/Arorangi - beach side. Beach Hut - $70 NZ per night - double bed, toaster, jug, shower, toilet and basin. PERFECT! Came home with sore arse from sitting all day and relaxing - brilliant.
Beach is not flash for snorkling, swimming only at high tide and only in certain spots but its only 5 minutes on a scooter to great snorkling and swimming. i.e. scooter round to Rarotongan resort, go past, pull over and enjoy the swimming and snorkling.
9 day scooter hire (Island bike hire - bout 10 minutes walk away) $14 a day.
Raro Backpackers also have dorm accom or $120 per night self contained raised units with verandah.
Contact Paul, hes the owner and very helpful.
Enjoy your rest and don't forget to try the Coconut rolls from the local shop - yum yum.
