Secure luggage storage at Raro Airport

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Cook Islands

Does anyone know what the current availability for short-term secure luggage storage is at the airport? Are the lockers still available?

Yes the lockers are still there. Depending on how long you want to store your bags, the folks at Air Rarotonga will sometimes store them for you also.

Just need to store bags between LAX ANZ early Monday arrival and Air Raro 2PM Mauke flight. We're hoping we can get our visitor's extensions in that time frame.

What's the best car rental to use for that short period with an airport pickup and drop off?

Kia Orana,

The airport storage lockers (immediately outside Air Raro booking office ) are operational - and well-used. Small, medium and large lockers available.

However, Air Raro cargo office across from the departures area can store your luggage while you are in town. Their fees are most reasonable for customer storage.

My recommendation for a rental car is Rarotonga Rentals located directly across from the airport, next to Cafe Jireh - email cutejag@oyster.net.ck

Otherwise the clockwise bus should reach the RSA (near Rarotonga Rentals) at approx 7:50am

Visitor Extension? Are you staying more than 30 days? My experience with extensions is that you will need passport, a copy of your ticket, if e-ticket, make a copy to take with you to the third floor office where extensions are processed. Signatures need to be obtained and the particular person that signs the extension was not around to sign. Final result; it took me three trips over three days to obtain the extension. Good luck. If you are returning from Mauke at some point you may want to attempt it on a seperate trip. Perhaps you can leave a check and the paperwork and they can mail it to where you are staying on Mauke. @Araura... Thanks... we've used those before... the ones in the building near the toilets.. glad to hear they're still there... we've left them with the Air Raro counter personnel before but they don't always hang around the area to keep an eye on them and they don't like us to leave them in the office.

@lagoon... Thanks... the baggage office sounds like a good choice for a couple of chilly bins.. Thanks for the car rental info too... we'll need to run around Raro getting supplies and gear before the Mauke flight.

@PapaMike... welcome back... we'll be on Mauke over 30 days. We've obtained extensions on several prior occasions and had to come back later the same day and in one case the next day. Teata with Tiare Cottages is checking to see if they will mail the permits to Mauke.

On the ANZ ticket prices...I can usually catch the time period I want by watching the specials but they just bypassed Nov-Feb this year and jumped from some Aug-Sep specials for $880 to March for $886. There was nothing for the Nov-Feb time frame.

Hi again,

Thought I'd mention that the airport storage lockers were moved alongside the Air Raro booking office several years back. They used to be located in a small building (formerly Agriculture) outside the toilet block, but when the new arrivals & departures lounge was completely rebuilt, the lockers were shifted. Much better location now, with new lockers installed.

The Air Raro cargo office is called Jet X and is past Air New Zealand's cargo hanger, due east towards the disused Agriculture fumigation building. Much better system for freight handling with Jet X being fully staffed during opening hours. Air Raro cargo division email - cargo@airraro.co.ck

Is it possible to store bags in the lockers for as long as a week, while in Aitutaki, or is there another solution recommended for this? I will have a whole bag of winter clothes with me for the next leg of my trip (Canada in December) which I'd rather not take to Aitutaki (if they even have room on the plane). :)

I wouldn't recommend trying the lockers in the Raro airport. That could be very expensive and I'm not sure you can do it for a week. If you are staying somewhere in Rarotonga before you come to Aitutaki, most places will let you store bags with them while you are gone and then pick them up when you return. If you are not staying on Rarotonga, you might want to book at least one night at the Aquarius right across from the airport. I believe they will store your bags for you while you visit Aitutaki.
