Short stopover in RarotongaCountry forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Cook Islands
We have a short four-day stopover in Rarotonga this July. Does anyone have any recommendations on where to stay and things to do? We will be travelling with our 10 year old and we prefer more action, including water sports, and culture to sitting on a beach. Budget wise for accommodation we're fairly flexible but we'd prefer somewhere not too expensive and not too touristy. Are there any smaller family-run hotels/B&Bs? Any links for more ideas would also be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
For a short stopover best to stay in Muri, Titikaveka, or at the Rarotonga with a 10 year old. Pacific Resort in Muri with its water-based activities and close proximity to other water sports operators, or along Muri beachfront including Muri Beach Hideaway, Muri Beach Resort or Muri Beachcomber. Moana Sands in Titikaveka, or a private beachfront rental villa, and The Rarotongan Resort has marine reserve and a diving centre opposite, yet it is a big property, but plenty of activities and ev ening entertainment and dining options. | 1
I would definitely suggest staying in the Muri Beach area - nicest beach, great swimming and snorkelling, shops and restaurants all near by - excellent location. The majority of the hotels in the Cook Islands are smaller run properties. Check out Muri Beachcomber -- owner managed, only about 20 rooms, self catering -- very nice. If it is in the budget - I HIGHLY recommend doing the day trip to Aitutaki and spending a day on the lagoon. I know it is a long day, and it is not inexpensive - but it is so worth it! The lagoon is beautiful, incredibly deserted islands with amazing beaches, great snorkelling, giant clams, nice lunch - definitely worth doing. Here is a link to my travel blog from when I was there in Aitutaki if you want to look at some of the lagoon photos -- http://www.tpiworldwide.com/carlhenderson/livingadream-journal/Aitutaki-Cook-Islands-Its-all-about-the-Lagoon-Cook-Islands-tg.html Have fun!! | 2
Thank you turou and trvlguy66! I've checked out some of your suggestions and it looks like we should have a lovely visit - it all looks so perfect and beautiful! We'll definitely spend a day at the Aitutaki lagoon, which I'm sure we'll all enjoy very much. Thanks. | 3
I agree with everything mentioned above. Regarding activities you may enjoy a buggy tour with Coconut Tours at Muri, and an island night (local foods and dancing) shouldn't be missed. Many of the hotels offer weekly island nights, or you could visit Highland Paradise for a great cultural experience. Another option is Raro Safari Tours who offer 4WD tours of Rarotonga. The Cook Islands Tourism website has a great list of accommodation options on their site here Accommodation Have a great stay! | 4
Muri Beach is probably the best place. Check out the places listed above, all are good. A lot depends on your budget. do the aitutaki Day trip if your budget can handle it, it is well worth it. | 5
