Snorkels n Scooters

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Cook Islands

Hi,

Myself and my girlfriend are heading to Rarotonga for 3 weeks as part of our RTW trip, its gonna be very much on a budget, we're hoping to get away with $30 each for accom and $20 food daily. (from research here, thanks guys!)

We want to rent a scooter and a bicycle for the 3 weeks, but cant find details on how much this will cost?

Also I hope to go snorkelling every day, would it be cheaper to buy equipment (can do this in nz either) or rent?

Thanks!

Buy your snorkel gear, rented stuff is usually rubbish.

I agree with #1. Just buy a snorkel/mask that fits well, for maybe NZ$30 in NZ. (you can get cheap sets at the Dive Shop in Avarua for about NZ$45 if you miss out in NZ). Also buy reef shoes, maybe NZ$15/pair, NZ$25 in Raro.. No real need for flippers, lagoon is mostly shallow and you can walk most areas.

Scooters will be about NZ$20/day, but cheaper for a weekly rate, maybe 10-15% less. They hold two people, no need to rent a bicycle ("push bike") which would be another NZ$7-10/day.
