Swimming near the passages?? Is it Safe? (Raro/ Papa Mike)

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Cook Islands

I have just booked to stay at a place (Maurua Beach Bungalows) on the south of Rarotonga. The place is right by one of the passages. How careful do I need to be when swimming.

Swimming in front of Manuia Beach Bungalows is quite safe. I assume that is the place you are staying, as I do not recognize Maurua Beach Bungalows. They are located on Muri Lagoon and not in close proximity to the passage. You may want to walk down towards Muri Beach Club or Pacific Resort for a better sandy beach. Have a great trip.

Thanks Papa Mike but the place is Maurua Beach Bungalows (I think they are quite new.). It is in Vaimaanga directly in front of the large passage. I am thinking that it is fine when the tide is coming in but maybe not out. Any thoughts?

Hi,

I did quite a lot of research for my trip to Rarotonga a couple of years ago and the posts/info I read at that time did advise staying away from swimming in front of the passages as the current can be very strong. I got a free visitor map/guide from jasons.com which shows you where any passages are.

From what I remember Vaimaanga is between a'roa (to the West) and Titikaveka (to the East), which are both fine.

Are you planning a trip to Aitutaki? If not, do!! Even just for a day trip if you don't have much time.

Not sure if this is in time or you have already been swept out to sea! Swimming in the southern passages is not a great idea; I got caught in a rip there and it was no fun at all - and I was diving, not swimming! The currents can be very strong, even 20m down, and warnings about the dangers of swimming in the passages are put in the guides for a reason.

Hi JannieO,

I am also thinking of staying at the Maurua Beach Bungalows. Since you should be back by now, can you tell me your experience? Is it possible to swim in that area (passages)? Thanks!
