Tahiti to Cook Islands!

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Cook Islands

Hi everyone,

I've just booked a trip in late Aug/Sept flying Sydney into Tahiti and flying out of Cook Islands because I assumed there would be some ferries or cheap flight between the two - but having discovered flights costing at least $340 and booked out and no info on ferries - it's a bit more complicated.

So 2 q's:

  1. How do I get from Tahiti to Cook Islands (any ferries, boats, hitching a ride with yachts etc...)?

  2. Also I only have 2 weeks all up - how should I apportion my itinerary between the two and what's a must see/do?

Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated especially about getting from Tahiti to Cook Islands!

Thanks to anyone that can help!

Only have 2 weeks and don't want to fly???
Get real... and that fare you quote is not expensive by South Pacific standards anyway.
For must sees, start by reading the tourism websites listed in the FAQ thread.

Sorry, no ferries, etc.
For a total of two weeks, you might just stay in Fr. Polynesia if your budget is tight and you can't afford that flight. But the Cooks are generally cheaper than FP, so you will save a little once you are there. But you won't save NZ$340 in a week.

French Polynesia is beautiful and so different. I would stay there longer even accommodation is more expensive. One week in Rarotonga is enough to see the island. THe only option from Tahiti to Raro is flying. I think it´s interesting as the countries have different traditions and people are different as well.
In Raro: go to the Island night, 4x4 Safari, hire a scooter, relax at Muri beach, kayaking in Aroa, snorkelling in Aroa...
