The Northern Group

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Cook Islands

Hi, I'm planning on a trip around the South Pacific at the end of 2013 and I would love to have the opportunity to see the Northern Group of the Cook Islands and wanted to ask if anyone has been fortunate enough to have the chance to visit these atolls or if anyone could offer advice on how to get to and from Pukapuka, Manihiki, Penrhyn etc. Any help or advice will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Sorry to rain on your parade but the Northern Group islands are very difficult to get to. The visitors they do get usually are on yachts passing through. It is very expensive to fly ($1400 NZ - one way) and the flights are not regular. There are cargo boats that go up there but then you can be there for a day or a month or two. You would be better off spending your time and efforts to see the islands of the Southern Group.

The Southern Group of the Cook Islands is, when compared to most popular SP destinations, relatively pristine and untouched. I find them a attractive because they also offer an uncrowded, safe, friendly environment, clean lodgings, easy local transportation, are relatively cheap and the locals speak English. They are also within an hour's plane ride to an International airport.
