Two backpackers going to Rarotonga in June. We have heard rumours of being able to get to other sounthern group islands by cargo ships or by blagging a ride on other boats as crew. I am a moderately good sailor and excelent cook and my friend is generally handy. Does anyone know anymore information about the cargo ships or is there anyone boating to any of the southern islands in June who is looking for crew?
The boat goes to the other Southern Group islands every couple of weeks, It's about 20 hours to msot of them. | 1
You'll want to post this notice on the "Life On An Ocean Wave" branch. That's where people, traveling as crew, post opportunities/questions. Sounds very exciting! | 2
Tahiti has more islands, it's better for sailing and island hoping. | 3
So is the Caribbean. But he is going to Rarotonga. Duh! | 4
The S/V Kwai sails from Honolulu to the Cooks, and as I understand, are looking for a cook with blue water experience. Check out www.Kwai Project. They carry freight to Christmas, Fanning, and depending, go on down to Aitutaki and Raro. | 5
According to a couple i met recently who were trying the same thing, you have to have a lot of time on your hands as the boat never seems to stick to its timetable - you just have to keep fronting up to the office to check when the ship is leaving - could be the next day, could be in a few weeks. also you may find yourself stranded for a while if you decide to stay on one of the islands as you never know when the boat is going to come back. | 6
