Traveling from Cook Islands to Yap, MicronesiaCountry forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Cook Islands
So this might be way out of reasonable request but my question is, has anyone travelled from Rarotonga, Cook Islands to Yap, Micronesia? I have booked my flight from New Zealand to the US through a student travel agency and they have given me the option of stopping in Rarotonga. Which I am very grateful of. I can t wait to check out the Cook Islands. But I have family in Yap and being that it is not every day that I can go to that side of the world I would love to go over to Yap. However my agency can not do this for me. So I am wondering if i can get to Rarotonga, check it out for a few days but then get over to Yap, then come back to Rarotonga before my flight out. I am finding it hard to search for flights or other ways to get from the Cook Islands to Micronesia. Any suggestions/ is this even do-able?? Thanks/Cheers
You may need to travel via Guam to connect to Yap. Alternatively you could connect via Honolulu and then island hop through FSM westwards and finally fly from Guam to Yap. | 1
Sorry there really isn't anyway easy way to get from the Cook Islands to Micronesia. I'm afraid it isn't do-able. You can't travel to Guam or Honolulu directly from the Cook Islands. | 2
Hi fvcella! Welcome to TT! It's not an easy route and it won't be cheap at all. You have two main options: You could fly from Rarotonga to Papeete (with Air Tahiti), from Papeete to Honolulu (with Hawaiian Airlines) and from Honolulu to Yap (not direct, you'll have to change along the route) with United. Alternatively, you can fly from Rarotonga to Auckland (with Air New Zealand or Virgin Australia), from Auckland to Cairns (probably changing planes along the route) with the cheapest airline available, from Cairns to Guam and from Guam to Yap with United. Be also aware not all the routes you'll need are daily (regardless with of the options you choose)... | 3
Air-Travel-wise you're going to be closer to Yap at either end of your trip.... AUK or LAX rather than RAR | 4
Those options in #3 will cost you a bum! I agree that travelling to Yap from the east coast of the US via Hawaii is easier than from the South Pacific. | 5
Wow, thanks so much for all of the replies! Very helpful, my question has been answered... Sadly I do not think I will be able to make the trip to yap. | 6
Don't give up on your Yap dreams--the people are so friendly and the diving is fantastic. Just do it as a separate trip, combined with Palau, other states in FSM, or the Marshall Islands. | 7
