Visa V's Travellers Cheques

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Cook Islands

We are off to Aitutaki in a couple of weeks for a holiday. We are unsure whether to get Travellers Cheques or if there are facilities for money exchange or ATM's. What are your ideas on changing money. Wehave been to Rarotonga and used traveller's cheques but thought ATM's would be easier.

My husband plans on kite surfing and I love a good cocktail to if you have any hints we would love to hear from you. Thankyou for taking the time to reply.

There's definately at least 1 ATM, think it was an ANZ bank one and it's in the main area of town near the wharf & postoffice. Not sure if there is a money exchange as we only used the ATM and then CreditCard for purchases, dinner out etc.
Aitutaki's stunningly beautiful, you'll have a great time!

Thanks PethGirl. We are looking forward to our holiday!!!

Catch the bank, while it's open. Probably easier, however, to exchange foreign currency on Rarotonga, if that's an option.

Have a great time!

Warm regards,

Gosh,Traveller's Cheques, I thought that they are extinct! Yes, Perthgirl is right! there is a Cash machine in Arutanga/ Wharf area. Hey, it all sounds back and beyond and very far away, but the truth is that your credit card is accepted almost everywhere in Aitutaki.Just have a wad of NZ and US dollers in cash just in case if you need it. I didn,t see anyone kite surfing but saw some local kids on small sailing boats on the lagoon by the Samade Beach Bar( Ootu Beach).Well,if can't find any kite surfing, may I sugeest that you take a boat trip out the lagoon with Cathy and her sister Kopu . It is a bit rough and ready type thing but you will have a great day.
Not sure where you guys are staying at but wherever it is, you will get something nice to drink. Also don't forget to book a table at Cafe Tapuna, the best place to on the Island. Aitutaki is a fabulous place. Enjoy!

Cafe Tapuna is definately awesome. We had a great dinner there and the decor is really cute too. Very tropical. We had a great time on the lagoon "cruise". We went out with Lagoon Explorer. The guy was extremely nice. He ran the cruise for us even though we were the only ones that day (we were there during the filming of American Survivor and the island was full of film crew and no tourists). We would not recommend Matriki huts. VERY rustic. Unless you love showering outdoors with the mosquitos this is not the place to stay.

Have fun, and hopefully you'll have the sunshine we were hoping for!
