#1 Thing in Fiji (to you)?

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Fiji

Out of curiosity, what is everyone's absolute favorite thing you've done/seen in all of Fiji? Why? Obviously everyone is different and will have been different places so there will be lots of different ideas of what's the greatest. But it would be fun to see what everyone thinks and, if everyone replies, this thread could become a great resource for anybody planning a trip and could help them decide what they wouldn't want to miss. Make sure you put what area it is in if it isn't obvious. :)

Epi's tour on Ovalau.
Snorkelling with Manta Rays in the Yasawas
Using local busses.

  1. Sitting outside after dark on any balmy warm evening, all year round (with mosquito repellent on ones legs and ankles of course!)
    2. Day trip to Vatulele Island on the Captain Cook and diving into the deep turquoise-coloured water which was so clear one could see the sand on the bottom. It was so wonderful I didn't want to get out of the water for lunch!
    3. Snorkelling in the bay in front of Botaira Island reort.

Love the thread idea,great info.

Haven't been there yet but we are due there in Feb.
I am really looking forward to a South Pacific sunrise/sunset,simple I know...but I've always wanted to see them.

3

Fishing/catching fish/eating fresh fish twice a day.

About the above sunrise/ sunset idea...can be quite short as no pollution and if on a small island perhaps only a few clouds in the distance! Better chances of bali-hai storybook beauty if climb a hill or mountain first! I did that on the millenium and was special scene to remember.
My vote: the people, laughter and fun times socializing. Snorkelling & swimming, pineapples & wild mangoes, and seeing special, beautiful places are all #2, because they can only be a part of the time unfortunately.

5

My 40th birthday in a village. A lovo (feast), kids playing soccer with the village kids, kava with the chief, followed by Sunday in the Presbyterian Church -amazing singing by the local village people (no not THOSE village people).

6

again and again diving in Levuka passage - very much unknown but you always find something new and special - recently a "long tailed ghoast - pipefish" ( identified by Mr. R. Kuiper) which is "not supposed" to live in Fiji.

Bobo's farm and Leleuvia island both very special places, for land and seascape, nature and people.

In no particular order:

A. Overall best impression after 2 months wander around the islands: Ovalau area (see above references) for the variety.

B. four days snorkelling/diving off south Taveuni -- but coral reefs anywhere must be the closest thing on earth to experiencing what being on another planet must be like.

C. socializing with the Fijians -- they don't accept introversion as an excuse not to join in

8

Beachcomber island, especially on NYE, which is where I plan to be this yr again, fingers crossed

9

Walking around Leleuvia Island at full moon (and being able to read the newspaper!!!)

10

Taking a Blue Lagoon Cruise and stopping on the Island, oops forgot its name where the actual movie "The Blue Lagoon" was shot. The most breath taking beaches and scenery ive ever seen.

11

Scuba diving in the Yasawas with the guys from Westside Watersports, never a dull moment.

12

The rainforests on Taveuni!

13

Coral reef fringing Robinson Crusoe Island has caves you can swim into from the side and holes in the roof you can exit thru. Gives other snorkellers a bit of a shock.
