10 days in Fiji

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Fiji

Hi, I'm travelling to Fiji on my own for 10 days at the end of March flying into Nadi. I would like to visit some Islands and see some on the main Island but have no idea where to go! I'm on a budget and would like to do some scuba diving and chill out on some nice beaches can anyone recomend places to go? how easy is it to travel to the islands? and some good places to say? Many Thanks

hi there

i stayed at Seashells (about 40 mins by car from Nadi) & dived right from there.

Hi, I'm arriving on the 14th, do you know what your plans are while your there?

ah, juuust missing each other, ha!

im either going to the coral coast first then to the yasawas or vice-versa. im absolutely unsure either way, its something ill have to figure out one way or another. Im pretty sure i remember something about a bus that you can take to the coral coast instead of a $60taxi or something. I think the boat to the yasawas is about the same also, each direction. As for where to stay on the yasawas, its a tossup between oarsman's bay or mantaray island. Both kinda expensive but not prohibitively so.

let me know if you need anything.

Ovalau would be my top pick - but it will take you a while to get there. Stay on the island for a few days then if you want a picture perfect fiji island you can hop on to cangalai on way back to main land. Yasawas although still very fijian, are not very fijian if you compare them to the rest of Fiji and are in fact very 'profit' oriented. For a cheaper option into Yasawas you can try to get a cargo boat as the yasawa flyer is real expensive. If you go closer to mainland (as far as Waya), this shouldnt be much of a problem - but probably easier to arrange for way back as they go back for grocries every few days. Main island besides the sand dunes cant really be compared to the far superior islands. I wouldnt bother with the Corral Coast at all if i were to do it again.

If you do go to islands I suggest you go there first and leave CC til later because seas are not as reliable as a bus when your plane is about to go! Boats use more fuel too so costs are higher, but you can save with the locals' transport instead of tourists'. Bawaqa cargo boat goes from Lautoka about once a week unless they have a shipment or hire. Call Western Shipping at 666-6548 for their schedule, but be sure to verify close to your date. Yasawa gets an unfortunate bad rep sometimes because a big resort can greatly effect a small island or village. Many backpackers want to travel cheap so some resorts book in 20-30 people at a time to make up their costs. There are many remote places still out there and the weather and beauty is incomparable to the mainland.
A CCoast bus will cost about $5; don't pay tourist prices when you don't have to. And of course there are many other wonderful, barely visited places all around Fiji. There are many independent resorts that are very cheap or just stay in a dorm at a medium priced one so you can get a good dive service. FVB is just introducing their new website (so it'll prob have a few mistakes) but it'll give you lots of links and ideas at www.bulafiji.com. Have a great trip.

There were two things we did when we were in Fiji that were must-do's! Both were done through Rosies Fiji.

The first was a full day cruise which took us to various islands where we could snorkel or just chill out on the beach. The crew of the ship outnumbered us and they fed and sang to us all day, making sure we always had a drink in our hands (all this was included in the cruise price)! They were the loveliest people and I'd recommend this to anyone!

Secondly, Rosies Fiji also do a full day Navua River Village Tour which is amazing. You'll travel up the Navua River in a little banana boat waving at the kids from the various villages as you go by. There are gorges and many many beautiful waterfalls all the way up the river. You'll stop at a village where you'll have lunch, a Kava Ceremony and dancing with the village people and you'll be able to buy various crafts from them too. On the way back down the river they'll stop at a waterfall so you can swim at the base. It' amaaaazing!!!

Hope that gives you an idea of what to do!

Cheers
Neil
