12 Hours in SuvaCountry forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Fiji
Hi - I have a 12 hour stopover in Suva (7a -7p) at the end of May. Any suggestions as to what to do and/or a good place to stow dive gear while I have a wander around the city would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
You can take a walk down to the Fiji museum, its at the end of town. On the way there you'll pass the Gov.t buildings complex. it's a landmark but not very spectacular I'm afraid. Close to the Fiji museum is the official home of the President. You can witness the changing of the guards at the gates -it's just in front of the sea wall. Not sure what time of day that happens... everything in downtown Suva is walking distance. Take a bus ride on one of the windowless buses. I recommend the Nasese bus. This will take you past the parliament buildings, the university of the south pacific and the national stadium sports complex. The bus is very frequent and it's about 70cents. So you can get off at any place and take a look around. Feel free to even go into the university, they have a huge collection of south pacific artwork and a few nice cafes. You can catch the bus from the bus stand at the other end of town or at any bus stop along the main road that takes you to the museum. Suva is not really a huge tourist destination....you can probably walk around town and do some shopping...watch a movie maybe..it's about $4.00. There are a few good pubs..O'Reillys, Bad Dog, Traps that are open for lunch too. You can buy souvenirs at the handicraft market or from Jacks in town. Just pray it doesn't rain...Suva is in the wettest part of Fiji...haha. You cud try storing your gear at the central police station...its also in town-behind the ANZ bank building. have fun! | 1
if you are flying into Suva you will actually be flying into NAUSORI which is a half hour drive from Suva City. SO you will have to catch a taxi cab to Suva. Which should be easy, not sure of the price O'Riellys and Traps are BARS that are only open at night. Nausori town itself will have shops also, not touristy, but local. Ask the airport if you can leave your stuff with them while you cruise off for the day. You could also taxi/bus to Pacific Harbour which is an extra 45 min from Suva, and hang out at the hotels or at the Arts Village. Swim/Snorkel/JetSKI and lunch down there with time to spare. | 2
For lunch try Govinda's or The Curry House. It's worth travelling to Fiji just to eat. | 3
Maya dhaba, excellent Indian food. Fiji Museum is great but also be aware that there is no beach in Fiji. Not sure about storing dive gear though... | 4
