5 days in Fiji

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Fiji

I've been backpacking for the past 5 months, and have stumbled upon a great deal on a flight to fiji, leaving Tues. Can anyone recommend where I should head to when I arrive, and any 'must do's' whilst I'm there please.

I'm very sociable and don't want to be in the sticks, or surrounded by honeymooners.

Is there a particular backpacker area? Is there backpacker accom in most areas?

With such short notice, I'd be so very grateful for any advice.

Thanks again.

On Viti Levu on the south end of the island near Sigatoka is The Beachouse...it's a backbacker style place right on the beach. You can camp or stay in basic rooms. Bathrooms are in a separate building. Nice and cheap! It's not in the sticks and is easy access to Suva and Nadi.

Don't people go to Fiji to get away from it all?

My advice is to yead for the Mananucas. These islands are easy to reach from Nadi. The smallest one is called South Seas Island. This would be a great place to relax and enjoy the beach.

If you are looking for a lot of socializing and such, check out South Seas Island, Treasure Island, and Bounty Island in the Mamanucas. Bounty has a dorm that is only 40 Fiji dollars a night, and you can ask for a local rate since tourism here is down big time.
Beachcomber Island in the Mamanucas is an all night party all the time. (We go there sometimes to get away for university in Suva.) You can take a boat from Nadi, and island hop up through the Mamanucas and the Yasawas and dive, snorkel, walk on the beach, and then catch a boat back in time for your flight. Ocotpus in Yasawas is the nicest for the money.
If you make it around Viti Levu, there are places along the Coral Coast that are cheap, like the Beachouse. Off the east side of Viti Levu is Ovalau, which has some nice cheap places, and then there is Leleuvia and Caqalai, all cheap and nice. (Caqalai is owned by the church, so you have to take your own booze.
Must dos - Mamanucas - at least one night there, check out Garden of the Sleeping Giant, then Sigatoka Sand Dunes. Suva has some great historical places if you want the city. Snorkel and dive if you can in the Mamanucas and the Yasawas.
