7 - 10 day plan - help!

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Fiji

Hi!
Myself and another friend (both 21/22 year old girls) are hoping to travel to Fiji in November for 7-10 days. However we are totally overwhelmed with info and cannot decide where we should visit/where would best suit our needs.
We are looking to possibly island hop a bit, and travel and sleep as inexpensively as we can (fine staying in dorms etc). We are looking for relaxing places, beautiful beaches and water, and also places that can show us a bit of real Fijian culture!
Any advice would be greatly appreciated - we're a bit stumped!

Island hopping through the Yasawa Islands sounds like your thing.
It is not the cheapest part of Fiji for either accommodation or transport, but offers everything you are looking for in a manageably small area with reliable daily transport links between the islands.
And it is decidedly backpacker-oriented with dorms, excursions and even a bit of partying available if you want them. The costs may not be Fiji's lowest but still seem to suit most backpackers.
See the options here: https://www.awesomefiji.com

If you wanted something cheaper and less touristy, you should stick to the main island of Viti Levu and maybe one of its neighbour, like Ovalau.
The beaches would be less gorgeous though, and there would be no island-hopping.

Let's be frank.
There are no decent beaches on Viti Levu. None.
Almost all the beaches in the Yasawas are gorgeous.

Cheers,
Peter

Taveuni is the spot. I would recommend camping at beverly beach and exploring from there. They have their own tents with nice pads inside. I just stayed there in September the cost was about 14$ usd per night. I would recommend flying to Taveuni from Nadi. buy your plane tickets asap on airfiji.com. I've been everywhere in Fiji and Taveuni is the best. If you go consider spending a few nights in the village of Lavena. Ask for Simone. You can take the bus there from Matei. You can also hire hiking guides in the village. Your stay there would be a homestay with a local family. Bring Kava root with you to the village you can buy it at the market in town. You can also take a short ferry ride over the island of vauna levu from taveuni. Other things to do in Taveuni......

Rent a 4x4 vehicle and explore the island

explore bouma heritage national park by foot on the miles of maintained hiking trails. do not pay a resort to take you there you do not need a guide! Just take the bus or hitch hike!

take a bus to the village of lavena or navakawau on the other side of the island. The ride and views are breathtaking!

The beach at beverly campground is lovely

Maravu resort on taveuni is also very affordable and close to beverly beach

Consider spending a night or two at bamboo backpackers in nadi when you arrive in Fiji. You can meet lots of other cool young travelers and make friends from around the world. The dorm is dirt cheap!

I reckon the Yasawas would be what you want - Taveuni is beautiful as well but very expensive to fly to & from - also the yasawa flyer is pricey too!!! You'll enjoy whatever your destination
