8 Hour Layover to Tonga? What to do/sleep/fly out? Options?Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Fiji
Bula! Long post – sorry… I need some help/advice. So – my plan is to go to Tonga then fly to Fiji for a cruise then leave. Would like to do more in Fiji but I won't get the time off – perhaps next year? Going to Tonga we obviously land in Fiji. I plan on taking a non-connecting flight to LAX from Detroit, Michigan. Flights leave LAX on Thursday, Sat and Sun… unfortunately NOTHING on Friday. Anyway – my official booking in Tonga is for Sept 17 which is a Tuesday. Original plan: Leave LAX on Sat Sept 14 and arrive in Tonga on Monday Sept 16… maybe spend a day in the capital b/f my big booking. That being, I was hoping to spend perhaps a few days in a smaller resort b/f Sept 17 – to rest and maybe enjoy another location. So I considering leaving on Thursday September 12 and arriving on Sat Sep 14 in the PM (4PM) – however, that particular date has an 8 hour layover time in Nadi Airport (arrives on Saturday at 5AM!). My questions really are… 1- Anyone been through this before? What would you do during this time? I assume Fiji airport is pretty small or at least 8 hour is too much time to spend there. However, is it long enough to leave and do something? If so – at this time of day what would you recommend? I always wanted raft Upper Navua River Rafting – it's easier rafting but I hear it's beautiful. Not sure if that's an option… or what do you guys think/suggest? Not sure about the jetlag… Maybe they have a "sleep" room at the airport? 2- Any other solutions you guys can think of? Like a smaller inter-island flight that I'm not aware off that may fly from Fiji to Tonga? ANY comments/thoughts are appreciated Thanks!!! PS. Feel free to privately message me.
It should be possible to make a quick trip to the Mananucas. Alternatively, visit either of the 2 nearby towns, Nadi or Lautoka. | 1
The upper Navua river rafting would not fit the time frame you have, forget a visit to Nadi, Lautoka would be more interesting. some people go to the airport hotels nearby for a swim in their pools. if you get a taxi make sure they put the meter on. | 2
you are pretty limited getting to Tonga. Get there either via Nadi, Sydney or Auckland or if you can get to Samoa there are flights from there to Tonga (2 airlines in fact). From Samoa you would need to go LA, Honolulu to PagoPago or Apia and then on to Tonga. I had an 8 hour layover at Nadi airport. I went to the hotel Fiji Gateway across the road for a few hours, they stored by bag whilst I had a meal a beer and a swim in the pool. There are several hotels round the airport you could probably utilise that way. Might have to pay a small fee or might be gratis use of pool if you guy meal, drinks etc. Not ideal but way better than Nadi airport for 8 hours. | 3
If I had only 8 hours in Nadi I would personally go to Lautoka and have a look around / relax. It's the second largest town in Fiji, there is plenty of cheap and good Indian restaurants, a market and a nice walk on the sea. You have to purchase a bus card for the value of 5 dollars at the Vodafone point, before leaving the airport. The journey to Lautoka takes 30 minutes approximately, and there is a bus each 10 minutes | 4
