Abaca - places to stay & timescaleCountry forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Fiji
I have about two days and two nights in Fiji (plus a bunch of too-short-to-do-much layovers). In that time, do you think I should go to Abaca? It sounds nice. How long would it take to get there? Is there a recommended budget place to stay? Or, bearing in mind that on the second morning I have to catch an 0730 flight, should I accept my fate is to explore Nadi? I hear there's a Hindu temple, ... (Timescale: arrive early am, in Fiji that day and night, next day and night, fly early am: around 48 hours.)
Abaca reads as an interesting place to stay (Ive not been there), but I understand that it is 1 hour by 4wd from Lautoka. If you are flying out at 7.30am from Nadi then youd need to leave Abaca at around 3am to get there in time (assuming check in 2 hours prior to flight) - Doesnt seem wise to me. | 1
We stayed in Abaca a few months ago, it is a stunning village up in the mountains which you can use as a base to hike around the mountains and waterfalls in the area. We stayed 2 nights and had a great time, thought we were among the first visitors after the wet season so the tracks were overgrown and hard going at times. Accommodation is with a family in the village (which we did) or in a dorm/bungalow further up where you will need to be pretty much self sufficient. Contact the Abaca visitor's centre (the number is in the LP, don't have it on me). I agree with 1, you will definately be pushing it to make it there in the time you have, for a similar type of experience I can reccommend Rivers Fiji kayaking daytrips into the Namosi Highlands. It will be a bit of a drive from Nadi (maybe 2.5-3 hours) but it is amazing scenery and great fun (though not cheap) and includes a village visit. They don't go every day though so you'll have to check if it lines up for you. We stayed at Uprising Resort in Pacific Harbour the night before to save the long trip in the morning and it worked out well. | 2
