| pelnjules09:41 UTC14 Nov 2011 | Hi all. My husband will be doing a 2 week paddle around the Yasawa Islands next year, and I am going to fly in to Nandi at the end of it so we can spend 5 days relaxing somewhere.
I have ordered a couple of books on Fiji so I can read up on it, but in the meantime I'm hoping someone may be able to answer some questions.
We would like to stay in a nice resort (4 star ??) away from the mainland. Ideally the island would be big enough for us to be able to occupy ourselves with some exploring - just a daily walk/hike would be enough. We just don't want to be stuck on a small island at a resort with nothing to do other than lazing by the pool. Whilst we're quite happy to get a lot of relaxing in, we'd also like to get out and about occasionally.
Can anyone offer any suggestions as to any islands that may fit the bill.
Many thanks.

I'd recommend that you go to Google Earth and check out the aerial film of the Yasawas. This will give you a bird's eye view of what each island looks like and the orientation of villages and resorts on the islands. If you like to hike, you might like Waya Island. You can hike to the top of the Yalobi Hills from where you can see the entire Yasawa Islands chain. There's also four Fijian villages on the island. (The Octopus Resort is on Waya) If you really are up for an adventure, you can actually walk to the next island, Wayasewa. At low tide, there is a land bridge- basically a sand bar- that joins the two islands! With five days, you will have plenty to do along with snorkelling and swimming. These two volcanic islands are extremely beautiful with lots of tropical flora and gorgeous white sand beaches. Another area you might really like is farther away from Nadi where several islands- Nacula,Nanuya Lailai, Tavewa, and Turtle Island- are clustered. These islands are flatter and somewhat dry ( you'll see them on Google Earth). By staying on one of these, you have the option of boating to a nearby island-none is more than a mile away- and explore. Nanuya Lailai has the Blue Lagoon where the 80's movie of the same name was filmed. Nacula has a resort called the Blue Lagoon Beach Resort which is getting rave reviews ( You might want to view TripAdvisor before settling on a resort.) One other place to explore is Sawa-I-Lau where boats will take you to a limestone cave where you can swim in cerulean water.
Enjoy!
