Any info about Lau islands in Fiji?

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Fiji

Hi,

I'm planning to visit Fiji this year but I would like to visit only the Lau islands...there do not seems to have any resort on these islands and that's what I'm looking for exactly!

I would like to camp on these islands during my whole trip, as what I have read on internet it seems that I will need a permit to access these islands. Can someone provide me more info about it because I really cannot find a lot of info about these islands.

I don't think you need a permit just to access the islands but I am sure you would need locals' permission to stay on them, and camping is considered odd in such places.
I belive Vanua Balavu and Lakeba have official accommodation. Elsewhere, you should get the local chief's permission to stay, and they would probably prefer you to stay in the village.

I have made several brief comnents about touring South Lau by cargo ship from years ago if you can find them.
I thought the villages and the culture were the main attraction on most islands.
My photos are here (click on them to enlarge):

If you just want to camp somewhere, there must be much more accessible places than Lau.

Thanks for your answer, I read everywhere on internet that foreign tourists have to get permit from the Lau Provincial Council in Suva prior to take flight or boat to the Lau islands. I know that for each island I will have to get permission from the village chief by doing the Kava ceremony.

Actually I forgot to mention that a part of my travel trip would be to stay at some desert islands of the Lau archipelagos, after getting approval from the village chief island owner of course.

So you just went to the Suva port and took a cargo ship to the Lau islands without any check right?

Exactly.
No problem whatsoever.
The best info on Lau is in David Stanley's Fiji Handbook. He specifically stated that it is a widespread misinformation that tourists need a permit to visit Lau, only yachts do.

Well, it sound good so, I will have my trip this year and I will keep you updated of what happened during my trip. Cheers.

OK, try not to forget it. ;-)

I visited Vanua Balavu (including the villages of Daliconi and Sawana), in Northern Lau in 2011.
At that time it was necessary to get a permit from the central government, but there was talk of that changing.
There is a stunning semi enclosed lagoon in the north west corner of that island called the Bay of Islands.
Northern Lau was a highlight of our time in Fiji.
There was no visitor accommodation in the village at that time, as far as I know, but they were very welcoming and I have no doubt that if you could make direct contact they would find somewhere to accommodate visitors.
Cheers,
Peter
