I've just returned from sailing round Ono/ Kadavu/ Great Astrolabe Reef, and had an amazing time. We saw very few other tourists, and the islands are beautiful. I don't know too much about the resorts there, as I stayed on a private boat, though I did some fantastic diving with Mai Dive off Ono (the owner, Jason, and his family are almost finished constructing a resort there, it's a small eco resort and looked like it will be great. The family and staff were very welcoming and we were extremely well fed when we were invited for dinner!). The walking in the area is great, and there is some fantastic snorkelling, including a manta ray cleaning station, which was spectacular! Tourist infrastructure is minimal outside of the resorts, but the locals will be happy to show you round or take you out in a boat. The area is truly unspoilt. By yacht was a wonderful way to explore as we could get everywhere, including the uninhabited islands of the outer reef, and we were always assured of a warm welcome at the villages; if this interests you you might be able to find a boat to crew on in Suva or Vuna/ Lautoka (Suva is the shortest sea crossing). Otherwise fly and get a boat transfer to a resort, and explore from there. Fishing is indeed excellent (and tasty!). I would go back in a heartbeat! my pics are on my picasa page sailing and diving and snorkelling | 1
Just to second what fyrelizard said : my partner and I have just spent most of the last two weeks staying at Mai Dive on Ono Island with Jason & Danielle - what a great place - their bure (now finished) is really comfortable and well equipped for such an out of the way place. We've stayed in a few places around the pacific (Samoa, Vanuatu, Yasawas), but this one takes the cake. Lovely people, fabulous food and incredibly obliging in trying to make your stay there as wonderful as possible. Snorkelling with the manta rays is an out of this world experience - really they swim so close it is amazing (one actually ran into me!) The diving is also spectacular if you're into that. Didn't do any fishing but I've no doubt Jason would help organise that. | 2
