awesome adventure?

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Fiji

Hi people,

I am visiting Fiji with 2 friends for 2 weeks as part of our RTW trip. We are planning on doing one of the 2 week fiji awesome adventures trips.

I was wandering if anybody had done these and have any recomendations as to whether it is worth it.

The cost is £500 - for 12 days accom food and transport around all the islands, the only concern is that the guy at STA said each trip holds upto 32 people, but there was nobody booked, as yet, on the dates we were going to be goin. We dont want it to be juts the 3 of us!

1. Any feedback on the awesome adventures?
2. how much would it cost to do a similar thing without the pre paid tour (would it be less than £500?!)
3. Is there a big backpacker scene in fiji?
4. any general do's and dont's for viusiting fiji?

Cheers Guys.....

Awesome Adventures are a reputable crowd and they also run the boats that go to the Yasawa Islands. A tour is good but most folks just do it themselves which isn't that difficult to do as it's pretty obvious on how to string your trip together (model it on their brochure). With a boat pass you can hop on or off as you like and they have a booking desk on the boat. It's generally not busy so most places fir you in on the day. Enjoy !

We booked a pass for 3 weeks including one night on the cruise boat. The places to stay are easy enough to phone and a lot cheaper to book like that. If you book it organised, you will travel in a big crowd to some rundown places. We stayed at Kuata, Octopus, Otto&Fanny and Oarsmans and would recommend them all. Botaira also looked very nice. You can book Octopus and Oarsmans at the airport. They don't give discounts. Most of the places have their own webside. It was cheaper to book by phone. Then you may get the cheaper 'walk in rate'. They all have dorms doubles and more luxury. Most places make you pay an meal plan for 3 meals a day. Only Otto&Fanny let you dicide how many meals you want. It's our favourite place in Fiji. We payed about 50-60€ per person per day in the Yasawas incl. food and drink in a double. Transport with Awesome Adventures is extra.

500 quid sounds like a lot for 10 days, you know. (well over $100.00 FJD) But if your looking for a trip that's pretty comprehensive and don't mind travelling with the same croud it could suit. Personally I would wait til I got there. Most backpackers have a tour desk and my suspicion is that you can do a lot better once you got there. Also do check out the LP Fiji guidebook. It's very comprehensive.

BTW I have been visiting Fiji for over twenty years now and continue to find it a stimulating and vibrant place to visit. I would be happy to answer any other q's you might have.

Good luck with your trip

Andrew
