Backpacking Fiji

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Fiji

hey everyone!

Just wanted to ask what the best/cheapest way is to travel around Fiji and the islands. We only have 7 nights and would like to explore some of the islands for as cheap as possible. We've looked at awesome adventures but have seen mixed reviews. Any thoughts?

Thank you :)

you can travel by bus around Viti Levu cheaply (FJ16 from Nadi airport to Suva as an example) and see lots of different places, first stop the Beach House on Coral Coast 2 nights, then a night in Suva, perhaps 2 nights on Caqalai Island, on the bus again to RakiRaki and then back to Lautoka, that way you don't need expensive boat transfers,

The bus around Viti Levu is a great trip. Allow at least 3 days plus side trips.
Taxis are also cheap for side trips.

The Yasawas are difficult except for the regular ferry although some resorts have their own boats and moving to the next island is sometimes possible with local boats.

Cheers,
Peter

I assume #2's comment about the Yasawa's being "difficult" is referring only to the cheap component, because actually travelling around the Yasawas is a piece of cake. The Yasawa Flyer isn't cheap, but it works well. I generally suggest just getting a Bula Pass from Awesome Adventures, then arranging the accommodation on your own at the places you really want to go to and can afford.

The mainland is far cheaper to travel around and is easily done with the public buses, but the Yasawas are significantly better in my book and worth the money.

Yep......

Thank you everyone for your comments, they are really helpful :)

We are looking at the Beach House on Coral Coast as an option for 2 nights then Robinson Island for 4 nights after which works out fairly cheap.

Thanks again everyone! :):)

Hi Julie,

If possible, try to get to Taveuni. It may not be possible on such a short timeframe but it's cheap and very, very beautiful. If you get to Vanua Levu, you should definitely try to see Taveuni. You can get a bus from Savusavu followed by a boat ride. It is called the 'Garden Island' and is one of the most beautiful in the Pacific. The people are friendly and the beach is lovely. If you want to go really cheap, you can stay at Beverly's Campground. Otherwise, nearby Maravu is a good option.
