Battle of Cook Islands or Fiji

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Fiji

Does anyone know any details about Fiji or Cook Islands??
Basically which is preferred? Im debating whether to go to a small island after going to Australia, and have been told to think about either of these two..
Is it true that the main island of Fiji isnt so great, and should stick to the tiny islands off of it?

Any suggestions would be great on this.. Thanks! :D

I would say the Yasawas in Fiji if you like lots of company and an organized approach to your entertainment or Aitutaki in the Cooks if you want a more laid-back apprach. They are both worthwhile and beautiful destinations.

Aitutaki in the Cook Islands is a lovely and romantic small island group. The main island is Aitutaki, where the airport, restaurants, and nearly all accommodation is situated. Aitutaki has a necklace like string of small islands surrounding a magnificent lagoon area. Daily cruises onto the lagoon operate 7 days per week. Accommodation ranges from small private homestay, to self-catering bungalows, to high quality resorts.

Several of the resorts also have licenced restaurants. In addition there are a number of small cafes around Aitutaki from cheap eats to freshly prepared organic platters. Aitutaki is enough to get around on a hire scooter for two, to cars & 4wd vehicles to pushbikes and safari tours.

The Cook Islands uses NZ dollars as the local currency. Air Rarotonga offers daily flights to Aitutaki, duration is 40 minutes. Rarotonga, the main island has a resident population of 12,000. being the biggest island it has a range of very good accommodation from backpackers to luxury pool/spa villas. Great range of dining. cultural shows and entertainment. Lts of colour and Pacific flavour in the Saturday market. A daytrip with lagoon cruise from Raro to Aitutaki is available for those on limited time-frames or for those keen on the facilities of the bigger island. The direct flight northbound to USA & Europe/UK departs Saturday night. Weekly direct air service from Sydney to Raro. Daily flights from Australia transiting in Auckland flying Virgin Australia and Air NZ.

Just so you know- Rarotonga, the main Cook Island, is quite small. The road circumnavigating the
entire island is only about 30 miles so you can see the whole island in about an hour. Aitutaki is
an atoll with only a few places to stay- very quiet but with a turquoise lagoon similar to Bora Bora.

Whatever you do, be sure to spend a bit of time one of these paradise islands. There is nothing like the South Pacific!

Depends what you want-there's some wonderful hiking in the interior quite unlike any other place plus lots more to see/great people to meet-you don't have to stay @ an all inclusive resort.

I also like Viti Levu, Fiji's main island, a lot.
The offshore islands have better beaches but Viti Levu is a much better place to explore and see "the real Fiji".
