Beachcomber

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Fiji

Hey People, I was on the beachcomber website & it says that dorms are $83 fijian a night. That seems SO expensive for backpacking. I'll be in fiji for a week with 6 friends. Is beachcomber worth that money?

hey i know this isnt probably much help as i havent been myself...but the three agents at STA recommended that rather than going to beachcomber, i'd be better off heading to ovalau island, just off the east coast of viti levu, 30 GBP return flying

it hosts the old capital of fiji, levuka, and is apparently untouristy. after reading a few reviews and guidebooks b.comber seems VERY over rated and priced....also get the impression its full of drunk brits...which isnt what im going to the south seas for!

someone who HAS been wil probably fill you in better

SeanPF is right. And at beachcomber you share the dorm with at least 60 other people. If you head to Levuka/Ovalau you get a dorm bed for F$ 15 including breakfast or a single room from F$ 23. You can combine Levuka with one of the off-shore Islands Leleuvia or Caqalai, which are as nice - if not prettier than Beachcomber - for around F$ 40 in dorm including 3 meals.

Or with a group of six you can rent a sailboat and cruise the Yasawas. Providing everybody likes being on a boat. That's what we did when we were there and it was absolutely fantastic to have the freedom of choosing our anchorage, catching our Fish for dinner, visiting the remote villages, Snorkeling where ever... The Fijian Captain knew the islands very well and introduced us to his friend for Beach bbq... You can see the boat on www.escapefiji.com
Enjoy,
Shawn.

I looked up the quoted website and I couldnt belive my eyes. Its really expensive.
If you really want to come to Fiji to hook up with other tourist - mostly with pasty semi-naked europeans with a beer in one hand and iPod in the other go to Beachcomber. Otherwise you can go to Ovalau and its close islets as was outlined here or if you really insist on staying somewhere in a resort go to island Nananu-I-Ra or Volivoli beach resort [on the mainland - off Rakiraki].

That includes 3 nice meals but I agree, it's still a rip off.
All the islands are the same, except the one in the north yasawas which do'tn even give you proper food.

yes, give beachcomber a miss, its so small you can walk around it in 30 mins or so.

try 7 with a stop to look at the turtles in the back. We timed someone who estimated 10.
