Bedget recommendations

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Fiji

Hi!

I'm thinking about going to Fiji for 10-14 days somewhere between November and January. The plan is to backpack around the islands. I'm looking for simple and cheap accomodation, dorms or similar. I want to relax by the beach, do some snorkeling, but also experience the "real" Fiji outside the beaten tourist path. Does anyone have any good recommendations for that?

I would like some help on how much I can calculate on spending on such trip.

Do i need to book anything in advance or can I just wing it as i go along?

Since you will probably be arriving at Fiji's International Airport in Nadi, you can catch great snorkeling and beaches
in the Mamanuca Islands accessible by boat or high-speed catamaran nearby. If you want to experience authentic
Fijian village culture, a good choice is the village-owned and run Wayalailai Eco Haven Resort on Wayasewa Island.
(www.bbcdi.ca/wayalailai) dorm beds and single bures are available for bargain rates. There's good snorkeling, hiking
and activities organized by the Fijians. The next island over, Waya, has a few casual "resorts" offering dorms for about
F $30 and rooms at higher cost. The author of LP's Fiji title chose Waya's Octopus Resort as their favorite recently.

You might want to book a pass with the high-speed catamaran the "Yasawa Flyer." It allows you to island-hop from
Nadi's Denarau Harbor to Kuata, Wayalailai, Waya, Naviti, and Tavewa. (www.awesomefiji.com) and you could easily
spend your two weeks working your way between these islands.
Another option would be to fly from Nadi to Savusavu on the northern island of Vanua Levu. Savusavu is a relaxed
harbor town of about 5,000 people in a stunning South Seas setting. The skin diving is so spectacular here that Jean-
Michel Cousteau, son of Jacques Cousteau, chose Savuavu as the site for his Fiji Islands Resort. But you can experience
the same waters and stay at one of many budget accomodations around Savusavu for about F $60.

Heh, oot varmaan Suomalainen..

Noh, tsekkaa Caqalai. Lausutaan Thangalai.
