Bicycles in Fiji

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Fiji

I am getting ready to move to Fiji for 6 months to study at the University of the South Pacific in Suva. I was thinking it would be nice to have a bike for my own transportation. I was wondering if anyone had any insight into buying a bike there vs. flying from the U.S. with one? Any other bike-related advice would be much appreciated! Thanks!

Based on 2 years living there, I strongly recommend you forget the bicycle idea.
There are very few bicycles (or motorcycles) in Fiji. Most bicycle riders have a very short life, I expect.

We also gave this advise to some other keen bicycle riders who moved there for 2 years from Australia and they agreed that it was good advise.

Cheers,
Peter

I live in Suva and there is a large group of cyclists, http://www.mapmyride.com/fj/suva-central/ who ride around Suva and in the countryside, we met one in the high mountains near Namosi falls, on a day trip, there is also a cycling Fiji association. The bikes available here are not good, but there are good bike mechanics, so bring your bike with you and as this article says a repair kit if you bike is really different. http://www.adventure-journal.com/adventure-guide-to-fiji/
