Booking accommodation before you go?

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Fiji

Hi all.

I'm new to Thorn Tree, this is my first post.

Ok, my girlfriend and I are going to be spending the first 2 weeks in December in Fiji before missioning round New Zealand. We'd like to know if it's advisable to pre book accommodation, or is it easy enough to just book when you get there? I understand that there are LOADS of islands to chose from, so some will differ from others. Basically we'd like to take in a few islands in the Mamanucas, Yasawas and have a trek round Viti Levu.

Thank you in advance for your response!

It never hurts to prebook the first day of your arrival. Other than that, I suppose it depends on how much you figure on moving around, and whether you have a strong preference for specific hotels/guesthouses/resorts.

Some places are very popular and pre- booking before you get to Fiji would be advisable. There are also many places in Fiji without a lot of accommodation options. Even if it's not busy, your first choice accommodation might still be full on any given day, and there would just not be many other alternatives to fall back on.

My own solution was to buy a phone card after I got to Fiji and called ahead to one or another hotel a day or two before I planned to go there. In my case, that was always good enough.

Christmas was traditionally very busy in Fiji, popular places like Beachcomber were often booked solid by about September. But since ast year's coup tourism has dropped, so it may not be a problem. Also, tht applied to mostly the last two weeks of Dec. when I had inquired, never asked about the first two weeks.

I agree with Oldpro, always good to have a night or two booked on arrival.

However, if your research shows you a place you think you definitely want to stay at for a few days, I'd book it sooner rather than wait.

That's great, thank you both.
