Bringing food into FijiCountry forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Fiji
Does anyone know what the customs restrictions are on bringing food into Fiji? We are getting a cake made from cheese for our wedding in Fiji and will need to bring this in. It's approx $1000 worth of cheese, so we would hate for it to be confiscated. It will be travelling from either NZ or Australia. Thanks
We bring in Cheese from Australia, but I know from experience they wouldn't let cheese in from Hawaii, and it probably depends on what type of cheese it is, I would be trying to check with the Fiji consulate in Canberra. or the one in NZ | 1
Dairy products are restricted, as well as eggs, but cakes usually are not, even they virtually always contain eggs and often diary products too. It all depends on the time and intensity of heating the cake was done with. Especially Cheesecakes can be made un-baked, mostly from cream cheese, and in that case I strongly doubt that it would be allowed into Fiji. A New York style cheesecake, with a baking time of one hour or so, might be a completely different matter though. You should request a permit for that cake, as it appears to be a big one too. Contact the Fijian Authorities at info@biosecurityfiji or on (679) 3312 512. You might need to provide the recipe and most likely they might request that you get a certificate from your own country's biosecurity/quarantine authority. They all work by the same standards. | 2
As a general rule of thumb, it's best to follow #2's advice and contact the relevant authorities. They will know what the restrictions are. More important, they will have the final word on this when you're standing at customs/immigration. If and when you do contact them, have some sort of written confirmation of whatever they say with you when you go to Fiji. | 3
