Budget...Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Fiji
Hey I am travelling to Fiji for the first 2 weeks of July, looking to stay in budget dorms, and not do an awful lot other than sit on the beach. Will probably go to no more than two or three islands. I am trying to work out my budget (GBP) and have no idea what I am going to spend! Have been told it is cheap but all the hostel websites put the dorms at around 40 pounds...AH.
A decent summary website is http://www.fiji.pacific-resorts.com/budget.html Keep in mind that for most places in the islands the cost of a dorm bed includes 3 meals. On the mainland, it'll likely only include a light breakfast. | 1
I can recommend Blue Lagoon Beach Resort and Octopus Resort. Spacious AC dorms (no bunks) & three very good meals a day for FJ$ 110 a day (August 2010), which is around GBP 40. The bar bill might add up though.... And you'll need transport on the Yasawa Flyer - can't remember how much that was. Both resorts have beautiful beaches, very nice house reefs and loads of activities, some free (kava tasting, weaving), some not (village visits, hiking, snorkelling trips). | 2
Just to add to #2 - village visits are free at both - and snorkelling can be done right off the beach - so only a small charge if you use their gear. Yasawa Flyer (one person/one way) to Octopus is FJ$121 and Blue Lagoon FJ$138. Can recommend both. | 3
Hey there! I just came back from Fiji a month ago. I was there for 2 amazing weeks. I would definetly recommend taking the Bula pass. You get 3 meals a dayaccomodationboat rides between islands. Most budget travellers i met there had the pass. You might easily get bored if you stay at only a few places during your 2 weeks, as the islands are very small and the food and entertainment tends to be very repetetive. But if you dont go for the pass and pick just a few islands to stay on, you must check out Mantaray resort. It was hands down the best resort in every way. Anyway i got away nicely with only 800€ (around 710£) and that included everything. I hope you have a great time! | 4
Ah thats awesome thanks for the help, wasn't sure about the bula pass as the plan was to just stay at a couple of islands, but as you say it ends up maybe being a bit dull as the islands are so small. three meals..sounds like luxury!! | 5
Follow the well trodden tourist track and Be Happy. Forget the eastern part of the country. There's really little to be seen. Seriously you wouldn't like it. Ignore that man behind the curtain........ | 6
