Buses

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Fiji

Hi there,

I'm about to take off on a trip with my husband, we are ready to go ... except we are a little confused about a bus or two!
I have tried to contact the bus operators and others but this is near impossible.
I need to know some times for the Wailoko, Sawani, and Sabeto buses.
Does anyone here have any idea of their time tables or how to talk to the companies?
Please help.

Some express busses come into the airport at Nadi, many other local busses go past on the main road about 200m from the terminal.
Alternatively, cabs are cheap and plentiful. F$1 per km. Flag fall is F$5 from the airport or F$1.50 if you hail one on the road.

Cheers,
Peter

I am looking to catch a bus like the locals. NOT from the airport. We will be already out and about. Hence the need to contact someone.

Catch a bus from where?
Anywhere along Queens Road there will be busses going past every few minutes. Just get on one that is going in the right direction and talk to the driver. I think you are wasting your time trying to be more organised than that.
Alternatively at the Suva and Lautoka bus stations there are bus company officials that will direct you to the right bus. Busses are plentiful on most routes. Get there 10 minutes before you want to leave and just talk to them. They are very friendly :)

Cheers,
Peter

I'm not surprised you're having trouble... Fiji local bus system isn't like a 1st world country bus system... In Fiji each local bus route is owned by an independent bus company (some bus companies own various routes)... In order to get information about a particular bus route, you will need to contact the bus company that owns that route... When you say you have contacted the "bus operators & others", who are you referring to? Do these companies own the route you are enquiring about?... There is no such thing as a local bus timetable in Fiji, you will not find a timetable listing at the bus stop, nor will you find a bus route map or any bus related pamphlets... Buses work on Fiji time (much like anything else in Fiji), most local bus routes have buses running every 10-15mins, however it's more a case of when the bus shows up it shows up... I agree with Peter, get to the bus stop a bit earlier, maybe 10-15mins early... This is how the locals do it... This is how it works in Fiji... Good luck

have a look at this link on the Nadi Airport website

http://www.airportsfiji.com/nat_public_buses.php

I know you don't want to catch the bus from the airport but this link has approximate timetables of the different bus companies
at the major stops from Lautoka to Suva

if all else fails just stand on the side of the road and wave the bus down - make sure you explain to the ticket collector where you want to get off

also for your reference an Express bus only stops at certain stops along the route where as a normal bus stops at all stops along the route - so if you are waving a bus down and it does not stop that is most likely an Express bus

you don't say where you will actually be when you want to get the bus, there is a bus station in Nadi, Sigatoka, Suva, Raki Raki, Nausori, Navua and Lautoka where all the local buses and the express buses start their journeys, and yes the locals do get the express buses from the airport as visitors generally are going by taxi or hotel coach pick up

I found this www.jipaconnections.com its online bus service.
