Buying a local mobile phone in FijiCountry forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Fiji
I’m going to spending a couple of weeks in Fiji during which time I will need to take a couple of long phone calls from the UK. This will be incredibly expensive if I use my uk mobile (cell) phone, so I was thinking about getting a local sim card or pay as you go phone when I’m there. Does anyone know if these are readily available in Fiji and if so what the cost is likely to be?
Yes, you can just grab a prepay SIM from the Vodafone shop at Nadi airport (or anywhere else). Can't remember the exact price, but the SIM itself is cheap. | 1
You can purchase a Vodafone sim with call credit for F$30 at the airport (the sim itself is just $4.50, from memory). Aditional recharges start at $2 and go up. Your 'phone will need to be unlocked. If it is not, you can buy a new phone from about F$70 and up. Likewise with data. You can buy a sim only for your unlocked modem for F$29.95 (with 100mb) or buy a new (locked) 3.6Mbps modem and sim with 500mb of data for F$39, or a 7.2Mbps modem with 1Gb of data for F$79. Recharges $6 to $100 (500mb is $15). Cheers, | 2
This might be helpful for you. Have a look at this YouTube video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KskxAoqXSOk it shows you the public arrivals hall at Nadi Airport. It shows you exactly where the Vodafone store. | 3
Just check the coverage maps to decide which company you should get. If you are on Viti Levu and Vanua Levu then coverage shouldn't be an issue, but some of the other islands can be, especially places like Kadavu and Taveuni, which are pretty popular tourist places, but not covered by all the phone companies. | 4
