| photomaniac16:40 UTC20 Jul 2013 | Hello,
I am going to Fiji in September for a 4 weeks vacation. I am contemplating these days which camera and lens will serve me the best. A compact camera will certainly not do. That means, an SLR is the best option. My issue is taking photos of both landscapes and wildlife as the highest priority. Though I am bent on getting a Nikon 5200 as a camera body due to budget constraints and camera's features , I still feel very hesitant about the lens which may best serve my purpose.

Those of you who already traveled Fiji , and are avid photographers of landscapes and wildlife ( especially birds highly perched on trees ) , which camera did you take with you ? Do you think the Nikon D5200 should be a good contender ? Which camera did you use ?

What about the lens ? I have been consulting many people. Yet I did not get any decisive reply. Some told me the dim light ambient conditions prevailing in rainforests require at least a 70-300 Nikkor lens. Others suggested the Tamron 70-200 f/2.8 which is more capable of dealing with poor lighting conditions. Which lens did you use ? Did you take pictures of wildlfe ? For purchasing lens , I would like to restrict myself up to a budget of US $ 900.
I will be tahnkful to get your advice based on your self-experience.
Thanks in advance, Eli

| h2ooh18:26 UTC20 Jul 2013 | For bird shots I 'd go with a 300. I use a 55-250 kit lens on my low-end Canon Rebel and found myself wishing for a bit more reach for those shy birds.
I also include a GoPro Hero3 in my bag. Very versatile little camera and takes about half the space as a short lens for your SLR. On my next trip south I'm going to mount it on my SLR's hot shoe and loop it running slo-mo video for whale shots.
