caqalai island resort (pronounced thangalia)

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Fiji

caqalai island resort

is off of the east coast of viti levu, so you'll have to bus to suva, and then get another bus north, where you'll wait by a bridge for the boat to the island.

the island is run by locals from a nearby island, when i was there aqua and saki were running it,

there is fantastic snorkelling just off the beach, it takes about ten minutes to walk around the island,
they have both bure's and dorms, and food is included in the price.

there is also a dive shack run by sharon with reasonablly priced diving.

you can go snorkelling to the outer reefs with the dive boat for a small fee,

if your going to fiji and have snorkelling stuff, bring it, as most places charge to use their masks etc.

as for price, this is probably the best priced place in fiji.

to book with them book direct as the money goes directly to the locals, if you book through an agent they take 20 -30%

you can contact the island by calling

362 0388
or emailing caqalairesort@yahoo.com

tell them jason sent you.

ps i thought this place was fantastic, great snorkelling, great beach, and pretty cheap.

if your on a budget and want great beaches, go to south east asia, but if you happen to be in fiji go to caqalia.

if they happen to be booked out theres another lil island nearby, but i didnt make it there, its called leluvia i think

j

oh yeah i forgot, its actually run by the church so they don't serve alcohol, but you are allowed to bring it with you.

this place was very chilled out, not a party island at all,
mostly just snorkelling, hanging out on the beach and relaxing.

oh and i think you can camp as well, which would make it even cheaper,
when i was there in july (08) it was 55 per person for a bure ( with mosquito nets)
and included all meals and afternoon tea.

dorms were cheaper and camping was even cheaper.

Wow- sounds idyllic- how much was the transfer there and back by boat?

2

i think it was 30-50 per person each way.

if/when i go back to fiji i will definately be going back.

Hiya, just wondered how long you all spent at caqalai? me and my boyfriend will be spending 2 weeks in fiji at the end of Oct 09. We want to go somewhere chilled out, (not party island) and where we can camp, we're looking at caqalai, but as its so small would 2 weeks here be too long? any suggestions would be great.

hey there,

i think we spent a week there, and it was pretty easy to do so. we didnt do to much, lots of swimming, snorkelling, read a book or two, it was very easy just to do nothing, walk around the island at low tide and look at shells, n stuff,

if you do get bored, their boat goes almost every day to get supplies or people, and the boat also goes to ovalau, which is close as well.

bring a few books and you should be ok.

depending on how you get there you can spend a few days just travelling there.

we stayed at the rainforest lodge, i think, just outside of suva, and went into suva by bus for a look around, and we also stopped along the bottom ( coral coast) just to break up the bus ride and see a bit more of fiji.

hope this helps
