| careena217:54 UTC02 Sep 2007 | Hi all, Husband and I are going to Fiji in Oct and plan on hiring a car at Nadi and driving around the island and just stopping when we feel like it. Have done the usual google search for cheap car hire but cant find anything cheap. Does anyone know of a local firm that hires cheap cars? thanks

If you want a junker you'll find some low life to rent you one-and then you'll start to pay.
and pay.

You read it here first!

Use a more reputable firm like Budget or whatever, but they are not cheap in any sense of the word. (Unless you have lots of hard cash that you don't mind spending.) Someone else I know looked over the various rental agreements and said that they were some of the worst in the world.
Having said that, it's great having a car to drive around the island, but be aware that a lot other drivers there are crazy drivers. You'll know what I mean when you start driving on the highway out of Nadi. At least you're already used to driving on the left side of the road so you have a slight advantage there.
Of course things might have changed by now, hopefully for the better.

But we do make a point of inspecting the car fairly thoroughly before taking it (helps to have a husband who is reasonably knowledgable I suppose) - and on one occasion they were happy to replace a tyre that we thought was dodgy. Used to also get cars from Khans until they put their prices up- but maybe not as expensive as the international firms.
