Carrying money in Fiji

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Fiji

Hello

What is the best way to carry money while travelling in Fiji ? Is Visa Card handy ? Should I also bring Traveller Cheques with me ?

Thanks

Forget the traveler's checks. Bring the Visa and get enough cash at an ATM to last you until you'll be passing through a major town again
(Nadi, Suva, Lautoka) Most of the smaller offshore islands do not have ATM's so you have to either be staying at a
resort which accepts credit cards or bring cash to last. As with all destinations, a money belt is a good idea for carrying
the cash, credit card and passport. Almost all resorts have a safe to store your money belt in. Just put the cash you plan on spending each day in your wallet. That way, a lost wallet will not be a major problem.

Compared to e.g. Vanuatu ATMs are abundant in Fiji on the larger islands, Beware of WestPac which charges hefty extra commissions (F$ 8 per withdrawal) if your card is not issued by a bank they cooperate with. I liked ANZ best because it gives small notes (20s and 10s). Important for European travellers: Maestro Cards are not accepted by many ATMs at the moment due to some security issues in the past. Service should resume with a change in the system by 2014.
