Cheap Fiji

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Fiji

Hello planeteers,

Off to Fiji in January. I'll be there for around 40 days - I realise this is longer than normal stays. I want to get to know the place.

What are the cheaper places to sleep, eat and drink, for a young solo traveller?

I have no idea where to go once I'm there, but I'm sure I'll want to get off to the islands pretty quickly. Is there anywhere that might let me work for a bed?

I'm going to do some couchsurfing, but that's mostly on the mainland.

Any ideas and suggestions are appreciated!

Ta!

Unfortunately for you, the cheaper places are definitely not on the islands. But the islands definitely have the best beaches and marine life.

I'll be in Fiji myself around the same time. I'm doing a post break-up tour there from January 2nd until the 14th, and put together a pretty affordable accommodation and transfers package for twelve nights @ $600. Pretty happy with it.

Have you had any luck finding places to stay? I spent a lot of time poring over websites and reviews for various backpackers, and managed to find (I think) three good, affordable ones that give me a good mix of partying and lazing around on the beach.

I'd be more than happy to trade ideas if you're keen.

i met a NZ guy once who was re-visiting a local village he had stayed and worked at previuolsy for a few months , he worked in the field, got accm but may have contributed some cash for the 'experience' ,im certain he never got paid but he was cool with that. local villages tend to have a Chief or Head Man who would approve it or not so trying to chase up this angle somehow may work for you.

If I had 40 days in Fiji, Vanua Levu, Taveuni, and Rotuma would be at the top of my list.
