Clueless about fiji

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Fiji

Hi guys,

Just doing some research on Fiji for my RTW backpacking adventure and am a bit lost! Hope you can help me with some of my questions :-)

(A) We are probably going to be in Fiji in January which I know is the rainy season. Does it rain all day? What are the chances of severe weather?

(B) Accomadation seems a little pricey for us, as backpackers we are limited to 20euro/26 US dollars per night each max. I found a resort called octopus which seems nice but what about the other islands? Are there many good quality budget dorms?

(C) Is it better to base yourself on one island and 'hop' during the day? Or does it take too long to travel between the islands?

(D) Where would be a good base island?

(E) Unfortunately I cant swim (hopefully I'll have learnt before I go!) so can you recommend an island that has more nature/cultural activities instead of water sports? (Although I'd be very happy to lounge on a beach and sunbath :-) )

(F) What would be a good itenary for 10 days? (For someone would cant swim!)

I know there are so many questions here but even the tinniest bit of advice would be very appreciated. x

A) Weather could be good, or there could be a cyclone, who knows. It will be humid.

B) Keep in mind most accommodation includes meals as well. There are lots of cheaper places than Octopus, such as Kuata, Wayalailai, Korovu, Coral View, etc.

C) No, there's no real way to hop around islands during the day. You should aim to spend 2-3 days at one place, then move on to the next. There are some places that offer some short trips, such as to the Sawa-i-lau caves from Nacula Island,

D) N/A

E) Learn to swim, or at least snorkel. Pretty much everywhere offers some hiking and cultural type stuff.

F) Depends on your budget, and exactly when your flights are. I liked what I did, but I was more concerned about enjoying myself than sticking to a tight budget:
2 nights Waya Lai Lai
1 night Manta Ray (my least favourite)
3 nights Blue Lagoon
3 nights Octopus

I also spent a few days on the mainland, but found it relatively disappointing.

Take a light rain coat, when it rains it really comes down. We were there in Jan and Feb it rained all but 4 or 5 days, we saw 3 sunsets in 18 days.
