Coral Coast to Nadi?

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Fiji

We're soon staying at the Fiji Hideaway Resort & Spa in Tagaqe village,
Coral Coast, Sigatoka. We have a 21-mth-old and an older child and are planning on doing a day trip to Nadi... is it worth it? We would especially love to buy food in some Fijian supermarkets but if they have plenty in Sigatoka it might not be worth going all the way to Nadi for the same thing?

No need to go to Nadi for food, there are plenty of food shops in Sigatoka and they have a great market. Even though I usually use Nadi as my base, I find Sigatoka more interesting than Nadi, IMO anyway.

I like seeing the capital city of countries though... but not if it's really not worth a long drive with a toddler, you know?

If you really want to see the capital city then you have to go to Suva. Nadi is a much smaller town that happens to have the airport where most planes arrive. Agree with previous poster who said you will find local foods etc in Sigatoka - but of all the towns I've visited in Fiji I found the locals there to be the most aggressive in trying to get you to buy from them. Suva has the biggest market in Fiji (second would be Lautoka) and a visit there is an experience, if you get there be sure to also go upstairs to where they sell the kava and spices.

Didn't explain myself... I didn't say is but I'd like to go to Suva but the long drive with a toddler (I think it's 3 hours) would probably be too onerous on us parents! So I was settling for Nadi as an alternative big city. So a different question: are there big supermarkets in Sigatoka or are they more or less just like small stores?

Hideaway to Suva would be 1 and half hours by car at the most, to Nadi 2 and a bit. By bus it would be too long a trip for a baby.

Sigatoka Shops and Market are just fine.

if you got a car to go to Suva you can stop at Pacific Harbour and break the journey, thats what most locals do. The market in Suva is very good and its interesting. eat lunch on the 4th floor at Tappoo City, nice views of the harbour and parking is cheap with a purchase.

Thanks jbinternational. How long would the car trip to Suva be from Sigatoka?

its about 2 hours from Sigatoka to Suva, and you are closer at your resort
