Coral

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Fiji

I will be staying with my daughter in New Zealand from mid-February to end March. My passion is snorkeling on coral and I would like to spend a week somewhere where good coral is accessible from the beach. I have been staggered by the cost though - £2,500 for one week, with flights from Auckland.
My grandson went last year, but he stayed in a 16-bed dormitory.
I am a 72 year old woman, so that is not an option. I don't want a five star hotel, or any nightlife. Just a clean and comfortable room.
One honest agent told me that the coral around several Pacific islands has been bleached or damaged - I have already been bitterly disappointed in Phuket and the Maldives.
Can anyone recommend some accommodation between a youth hostel and an hotel? Or better still, a package to include flights.
All advice gratefully received.

Most islands in the Yasawa group in Fiji have good coral off the beach.

Cheers,
Peter

Have you tried looking at booking sites such as orbitz.com, travelocity.com or expedia.com. I just saw an offer on the expedia site for flights AKL -NAN -AKL with a week in an Island Bure at Mana Island Resort for about CDN $1650 - dates of February 26 - March 5. You would have to add on transportation to Mana and meals. If you do a search on Mana you will find that it rates very well for snorkeling off the beach. You might find even better deals than that one - hope this helps!
