Diet drinks in Fiji

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea / Fiji

Ok, so I know this is a question lots of you will probably laugh at, but I'd really like to know if there are many diet drinks in Fiji. Can anyone list them for me? Hoping there is more than just Diet Coke (hopefully there's at least that though!).

Sorry to say but diet drink options are very limited here!
Supermarkets sell below:
Diet Coke
Coke Zero
Pepsi Max
Diet Powerade
- that's all
Petrol stations, shops, restaurants, resorts etc mostly sell all of the above except Diet Powerade.
There is a store called "Best Buys" in Nadi & Suva... They sell a variety of imported foods/drinks from USA, you may find a few more choices there, but I'm not too sure what their diet selection is like.
Hope you like Coke or Pepsi :)

the best diet drink you can get is coconut water straight from the coconut or water, why drink an artificially sweetened drink will harm your health in the long term as research is now showing

2

Ditto what jb said! If you must have that dose of sugar, why not try a fruit juice diluted with water?

3

Thanks very much for that info, vfernandez00. I wish they had diet lemonade at least... sigh. To the other posters, thanks for your concern, but I was after info about what type of diet soft drinks Fiji has, not a lecture about what I should not drink.

soninicole....

You'll learn a lot more on this forum if you turn off your positive affirmation filter....

5

fresh coconut water is the local product and I've never heard of it causing diabetes or heart disease, people only thought sugar drinks were bad health wise, but not tons of research is showing diet drinks at fault http://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-2275500/Diet-fizzy-drinks-make-60-MORE-likely-diabetes-regular-fat-versions.html

6

I'm a Type 1 diabetic, already, OK? Hence that's why I'm interested in what diet drinks are available in Fiji. I am not interested in anything else, OK!!!!

7

Wow... Soninicole only asked what type of diet drinks are sold in Fiji, nothing more nothing less... Not to offend anyone, but no one needs to know why or needs to lecture about how unhealthy it may or may not be... It's really no-ones business why anyone chooses to eat or drink certain things... I for one have a rare medical condition which prevents me from eating or drinking ANY fruit, so if it was me who posted soninicoles question I'd be really pissed about the responses... Just saying

8

Thank you!!!!

9

And I also wanted to say I'm really sorry you can't eat fruit; as it's my major dietary intake, I feel for you!

10

Hope this hasn't discourage you from posting any future questions in this forum Soninicole

11

I looooooooove fruit, so was a bit devoed when I was diagnosed... But you learn to deal with it... I'm sure you know what it's like to not be able to eat certain things that you love!! :)

12

Yep, and thank you very much for the support. Luckily I have thick skin . :-)

13

not a lecture about what I should not drink
Luckily I have thick skin

The thick skin is called being overly defensive. Seeing an attack where none exists. Perhaps this says something about your own expectations and past experience.

I, for one, didn't see any lecturing going on. What I saw was some decent suggestions for alternatives to the limited diet drink options.

14

Gordon Bennett. I don't spend half an hour thinking of my responses you know. Was-just-seeking-info-about-diet-drinks-in-Fiji. That's all. Thank you.

15

Ok, so I know this is a question lots of you will probably laugh at,

You were right! I think everyone reading this thread will get a good laugh out of it...

16

The suggestions were definitely meant as alternatives only, not what-you-should-be-drinking advice. I think with this lack of tolerance (on the OP's part) things might not go too well for him/her in Fiji.

17

They used coconut water for transfusions in WW2 in lieu of blood plasma. How bad could it be to drink?

18

Well ... The OP has Diabetes. And this is what the American Diabetes Association says about coconut water ...

So, as much as I enjoy drinking it myself, without diet thoughts though, coconut water is not necessarily the best diet drink for everybody. Or a diet drink at all. Coconut water still has 46 calories per 240 g serve (8 liquid ounces), non-diet coke has 97, diet coke has 3 calories. That serve of coconut water contains 6.3 g of sugar, if you look for sugar free when saying diet.

19

wksamoa, what the American diabetic society is talking about are the myriad of coconut water drinks for sale in the US,( I've just been there and seen them first hand) not what comes from the pure young coconut, there are health benefits for diabetics from drinking coconut water eg 200ml, but like all things people go to excess, and its not drinking diet drinks which is the concern for everyone it is the health effects of the artificial sweeteners which are now becoming apparent.

Some info for others interested in this topic, as I'm now here and can see for myself what's available. You can get Pepsi Max here and you can also get some diet cordial (Thriftee brand) in 3 or 4 different flavours, but I only found this cordial in one supermarket in Sigatoka (haven't been shopping in any village/town other than Sigatoka).

Water, tea !!
